MLA Style Guide - 8th edition

About MLA

The Modern Language Association created a standardized format for writing scholarly material in the humanities known as MLA Style. This covers how to format a paper, how to include in-text citations, and how to properly list your sources at the end of the paper.

The latest version of the MLA Style Guide was published in 2016. This guide aims to break down the various aspects of MLA style to make it less intimidating.

Core Elements

There is now one standard, universal format that researchers can use to create their citations. You will create a citation by following MLA's list of core elements which are assembled in a specific order. The MLA core elements are:

  1. Author.
  2. Title of Source.
  3. Title of Container,
  4. Other Contributors,
  5. Version,
  6. Number,
  7. Publisher,
  8. Publication Date,
  9. Location.
