Inspire 2020

Session Descriptions

Speed Dating

Flipping the Stage: Amber Gillie

The use of the jigsaw method will be presented. This strategy allows students to learn from each other and experience the teacher role.

Problem Solving Skills: Gerry Nemeth

Problem solving skills are one of the most important "soft skills" employers are screaming for in the year 2020. Do not be afraid to challenge your students with some "out of the box" thinking opportunities!

Pick-a-Postcard Kit: Jennifer Kukis

This short experiential session will introduce participants to  a specific experiential tool called Pick-a-Postcard Kit. The use of postcards is an engaging tool for practicing the use of metaphor and figurative language. This tool helps students express themselves using a picture or symbol. It allows them to talk or journal about the object or image rather than about themselves directly.

Review of Games for Learning: Mike Substelny

PTK's Stories that Connect Us
Lisa Augustine, Maria McConnell & PTK Members

During this interactive session, you will learn about Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and their College Project entitled "The Stories That Connect Us". This project, based on a true story, is “The story of one choice that changed a generation. Two cultures...Two families...and the Iraqi girl who bound them together."  -A Brave Face This story touches on a variety of themes that can be integrated into any number of our courses. Ideas will be shared as to how to incorporate one (or more) of these themes in your course.
Additionally, details will be shared about a contest, based on the book, that will be open to students. The focus of the contest will be, "A choice that can change a generation." The contest is open to individual students and/or groups of students. Submissions can be made through artwork, written essays, short stories, poetry, song, photography, etc. A number of valuable prizes will be awarded to contest winners.
Distribution of the book, A Brave Face, will continue during the spring semester for all faculty, staff and students. Information will be provided on how to obtain free copies of the book for you and your students.

Land-Based to Fully Online
Tammy Bosley & Tammy Macek

This 50 minute session will discuss the challenges and opportunities for offering a traditionally land-based course in a fully online platform. Topics will include: course design, collaborating with eLearning, ancillary materials, making connections with students, and organizing course content in an approachable manner. The presenters will address initial lessons they have learned during the planning process, as well as outcomes from running the class for the first semester.

Thinking about Course Grades
Ben Cordry

Often we assign final grades based on some percentage scale or point values.  Maybe anyone with an overall average of 70-79% gets a "C" or anyone with 200-240 points gets a "C".  We also have the idea that "C" is average, "B" is good, and "A" is excellent.  But, is this a good approach to assigning grades?  This discussion/presentation will explore potential problems and alternatives.  This session is intended to encourage informal conversations and explorations of grading.

UNC-Greensboro Site Visit Report
Ben Cordry, Aimee Dickinson, Monroe Kennedy, Christine Sheetz

A team of faculty visited UNC-Greensboro this fall to learn about their Center for Teaching Innovations and their approach to culturally responsive pedagogy. This panel session will share what was learned and discuss what may be applicable to LCCC.

Office Yoga
Renee Crates

Sitting at a desk for hours on end places unnecessary strain on the lumbar spine, overstretches the mid to upper back, and shortens the chest and hips—leading to neck, shoulder, and low back pain. Learn some yoga poses to help your body release tension and stress throughout the semester.

How to of CDSO Forms Made Simple
Mary Jo DiGiandomenico, Ana Parrilla & Marianne Carvour

The interactive workshop is appropriate for ANY faculty that desire to CREATE or REVISE a CDSO form. Attendees are highly encouraged to bring their laptops or other electronic device to access their own or new CDSO forms. The purpose of accessing old or new CDSO forms is to make changes if deemed necessary.
A brief overview of how to access, maneuver, and edit course materials in the Leepfrog system and how to write course outcomes that align with the appropriate domains, e.g. cognitive, psychomotor, & affective.
Lastly, TIPS will be shared with faculty on “How to Prepare Yourself for the Division & Curriculum Council presentation. PREPARE, PLAN, & PROOFREAD.”

Video Assignments, Exam "Post Mortem" & Plickers
Amber Gillie

Sharing resources and ideas is a great way to work smarter, instead of harder! In this workshop, I will share how I stole ideas from the OATYC conference this past fall, and began to implement them in my courses. Topics will include implementing video assignments, exam “post mortem” reflection sheets, and using plickers in the classroom. This will be an interactive workshop that allows participants the chance to create and upload their own video to a discussion board, customize an exam “post mortem” sheet, or play with plickers.

Report from the Lilly Conference on Teaching & Learning
Aldena Harris & Craig Peneff

In this interactive session, the two LCCC faculty members who attended the Lilly Conference on Teaching & Learning in November will share their key takeaways from this inspiring conference.

Adaptive Learning
Jerry McFadden

Imagine that you could give every student their own personalized course, made specifically for their strengths, weaknesses, goals, and level of engagement. Imagine a course that adapted in real-time to their activity and to their performance and interest level.  That’s adaptive learning. This session will provide an overview of adaptive learning technology using Pearson and McGraw-Hill software and how it is used in the classroom.  The session will show examples of the use of Dynamic Study Modules (Pearson) and the use of the SmartBook (McGraw-Hill) technology from the student's and faculty's perspective.  We will review examples of adaptive learning reports that can help faculty quickly evaluate student strengths and weaknesses and adjust their delivery methods to improve comprehension of the subject matter and improve learning outcomes.

Enhance the Learning Process by Playing PowerPoint Jeopardy!
Gerry Nemeth

I have been using PowerPoint Jeopardy inside and outside of the classroom to enhance the learning process for 15+ years.  The students get excited about reviewing for a test in this manner. Jeopardy games can be used in ANY subject. Creating a custom game is easy. We will play an LCCC game with video and audio clues, lights and lockout buzzers. Prizes will be awarded to all who participate as contestants!

Exam Review Day
Lisa Sheppard

Have you ever struggled with what to do on a review day before an exam?  I will share an activity I use to engage students and make them an active participant in the review process.  I use this activity in mathematics classes, but it is an activity that could be applied to other disciplines as well.

Using an Excel Database and Pivot Charts for Statistical Analysis
Jeff Walmsley

This presentation will share how statistical data on student performance has been used to monitor and improve program performance, and to gain insights into student performance indicators.
