NOTE: Format citations so they are double-spaced and all lines after the first line are indented 1/2 inch from the left margin (i.e., hanging indent).

If a DOI is present in the citation:

Basic Rules for APA Citations

Basic Rules: 

  • Must be double spaced
  • All lines after the first line of each entry should be indented one-half inch from the left margin (i.e., hanging indent)
  • List authors’ names as they are listed in the article (Example:  Reid, B M., Smith, J. R. & Moss, J.)
  • Title of the work:  Capitalize the first word of the title, the first word of the subtitle, and proper nouns within the title
  • Capitalize all major words in journal titles
  • Italicize the journal title and the volume
  • Issue number is located within parentheses
  • Include the page numbers
  • Include the DOI in the reference if one is present
  • If no DOI has been assigned, provide the home page URL of the publisher. (APA rules)
  • NOTE: While APA Style says “it is not necessary to include database information (192)”, some instructors MAY require that instead of the publisher URL, you use the Permalink to the article in this format:

Citation Format from EBSCO Databases

Use the E-mail or the Cite options from the Tools (right side of screen). Select APA style, then copy, paste and EDIT the citation.

CAUTION! Known formatting problems with APA citations:

  • if citation is shaded when you paste it into your word processor, select the Merge Formatting Paste option.
  • Check capitalization
    • Title of the article: Capitalize first word, first word of a subtitle and proper nouns within the title.
    • Title of Journal: Capitalize all major words. Un-capitalize minor words
  • total number of pages is incorrectly included (delete the "4p")
  • format for hanging indent and double-spaced
