The Unintended Consequences of the Widening Gender Gap: Who Are We Leaving Behind?

Dr. Ramona Anand, LCCC Society for Women Engineers

Dr. Anand served as Project Manager and currently teaches at Lorain County Community College (LCCC). She received MS in Electrical Engineering, MS in Technical Education. Ms. Anand worked as Principal K –12, Oxford International School, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Ms. Anand volunteers as panelist with National Science Foundation since 2010. Ms. Anand serves on advisory boards, certification committees etc.

She is founder SWE Collegiate Interest Group at LCCC, first of its kind at community college. She was recognized by YMCA Women of achievement, 2016, Region G Advancing Leader Award, SWE Mission Bronze Award, 2016 &17, Engaged Advocate award, 2017, US Army partnership award 2017. She served as new collegiate section coordinator, 2015. She was recognized by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh in 2005. She has made representation at Capitol Hill for STEM advocacy, 2016, presented at National Academies of Sciences, 2016 and has a voice in the policy for K-12 Engineering Education. She is serving on SWE committees and chair of outreach for NEOhio for several years.

Dr. Marilyn K. Bombac, American Association of University Women (AAUW)

Dr. Bombac is a dynamic organizational consultant with an extensive background in education, government and business organizations throughout the country, from the Pentagon to Hawaii.   In Nebraska, she served as the Executive Director, Leadership Institute, U.S. Strategic Command, Offutt AFB, for ten years, where she built organizational coalitions, facilitated senior teams, designed surveys and served as the Educational point of contact for the Command. 

Dr. Bombac served as the Nebraska President for the American Association of University Women and also as the Chair for AAUW-Omaha Tech Savvy, to create an awareness of STEM educational and career opportunities for middle school girls and their parents.   She proactively established win-win partnerships with colleges/universities; and, actively participates in church and community initiatives.

She received her B.S., Education, George Mason University; M.Ed., Educational Administration, University of Hawaii and her Ph.D., Educational Leadership, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Ms. Me’lani Labat Joseph, Principal, Transformative Innovations

Ms. Labat Joseph has over 25 years of experience in community and youth STEM program development and management. She is the Principal of Transformative Innovations, a consulting company which provides strategic thinking and technical assistance to help organizations and institutions implement high impact STEM strategies that maximize youth and community outcomes. Before that, Me’lani was the Director of Engineering for the Leonard Gelfand STEM Center at Case Western Reserve University where she was responsible for providing leadership and oversight of the design, development and implementation of preK-12th grade STEM outreach programs serving thousands of youth in the metropolitan Cleveland area.

Most notably, she created the program model for the innovative North Star Collaborative, a multi-year, year-round enrichment program for a cohort of girls attending the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s Warner Girls Leadership Academy through Laurel School in Shaker Heights, now entering its 15th year. She also co-created the Case Anatomy Camp in 2009, a unique STEM outreach program with Dr. Sue Wish-Baratz from the CWRU School of Medicine which was featured in the March 2014 edition of American Way, the American Airlines-American Eagle in-flight magazine. In 2018, Me’lani was featured on WKYC, Channel 3 as part of their Girls in STEM Initiative. In 2019, she was recognized as a Notable Woman in STEM by Crain’s Cleveland Business magazine.

Me’lani is involved in various volunteer and civic activities and is a board member of the youth program Advantage Cleveland Tennis and Education, Inc., an advisory member of the REACH Program at University School and a board member of The Math Movement, a math enrichment program. She has served on the board of directors of the Black Alumni of MIT and was co-chair of the Admissions Sub-Committee for 3 years.

She obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and she obtained a Master of Public Policy degree from the University of Chicago, Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies, concentrating in Urban Poverty.

Derrick L. Tillman-Kelly, PhD, is chief of staff, serving as principal advisor to Dean Ayanna Howard. An experienced higher education researcher, administrator, and project manager, he most recently served as director of the Fellows Program and Network Engagement for the University Innovation Alliance (UIA).
