Citation Builder - Citefast

Citation builders, like Citefast, are online tools that help you to create (or "build") citations. Some are FREE to anyone, at any time. Fill in the blanks for each source and the citation builder will format the citation according to the style you choose. If your source is a webpage, you can enter it to automatically fill out most of the blanks. Double check the data and then you'll have your citation ready to go.

APA Basic Citation Format

APA citations consist of four basic parts: Author. (Date). Title. Source.

  • Author: List the author's last name, a comma, then first and middle initials or the organization creating the work followed by a period.
  • Date: Within parentheses, note the date of publication - typically just the year or note n.d. if no date of publication or last update is found, then include a period after the ending parenthesis.
  • Title:
    • If the work is a standalone item like a full website or book, put the title in italics and only capitalize the first word of the title and subtitle followed by a period.
    • If the work is part of a larger publication like one page of a website or one article from an encyclopedia, list the title in regular text (no italics or quotes) and only capitalize the first word of the title and subtitle followed by a period.
  • Source:
    • If the work is a standalone item, list the publisher for books and/or the URL for online works. End with a period unless you are listing a URL.
    • If the work is part of a larger publication, list the title of that larger publication in italics and capitalize primary words like a normal title, followed by the URL for online works. End with a period unless you are listing a URL.

Examples:

Citing Images in a PowerPoint

To cite an image from online in a PowerPoint, you'll insert the image and then insert a text box below the image that has the copyright attribution for the image. This is basically the same information as your citation, but in a slightly different order.

Format for Text Box Under Images (can copy and paste the following text then fill out or delete the pieces of information as needed):

Note. From Title of Webpage, by A. A. Author and B. B. Author, year, Site Name (URL).
