APA Style Guide - 7th edition

A guide to APA style

Where is your article?

Journal article with a DOI:

  • DOI = digital object identifier 
  • Use only the format https://doi.org/xxx
    • If the DOI begins with other prefixes such as http://dx.doi.org/ or doi or DOI, change the prefix to https://doi.org/. 
  • Always include the DOI if there is one, even if you used the print version.
  • The date for a journal article is usually just the year. 
Author, A. A. (Date). Title of article: Subtitle. Journal Title, vol(no)pp–pp. https://doi.org/xxxx
Example:  

Herbst-Damm, K. L., & Kulik, J. A. (2005). Volunteer support, marital status, survival of terminally ill patients. Health 

     Psychology, 24, 225-229. https://doi.org/10.1037/0278-6133.24.2.225

  • Do not use a URL, permalink or database name.  Treat it as a print source.
  • This is a change from the APA Manual, 6th ed. 

Author, A. A., & Author, B.B. (Date). Article title: Subtitle if there is one. Journal Title, vol(no), pp–pp. 

Example:  

Sillick, T. J., & Schutte, N. S. (2006). Emotional intelligence and self-esteem mediate between perceived early

parental love and adult happiness. E-Journal of Applied Psychology, 2(2), 38-48. 

⇒ In-text parenthetical citation: (Sillick & Schutte, 2006)

⇒ In-text narrative citaitonSillick and Sillick (2006)

Magazine/Newspaper article:

  • If there is a DOI, include it.
  • If there is not a DOI, do not use a URL, permalink or database name.  Treat it as a print source.
  • A magazine or newspaper article is less likely to contain a DOI.
  • The date for a daily or weekly publication may be longer, e.g., year, Month day.
  • If there are no volume, issue or page numbers, omit.
Author, A. A. (Date). Article title. Magazine or Newspaper Title, vol(no), pp–pp. https://doi.org//xxx

Magazine Example:

Bednar, J. (2020). A new reality  as an economic shutdown deepens some relief

     emerges. BusinessWest36(25), 6.

Newspaper Example:

Magazine/Newspaper article online, but not from a database: 

  • If there is a month and/or day, include those in the date.
    • Magazines are more likely to have a specific date than journals. 
    • Newspapers are likely to have a specific date. 
  • If volume, issue numbers and pages are not provided, omit.  
  • If the author is not provided, move the title to the author position, followed by the date. 
    • In the in-text citation, if the title of the work is italicized in the reference, also italicize it in-text.
    • In the in-text citation, if the title of the work is not italicized in the reference, put the title in quotes in-text.
    • In the in-text citation, capitalize titles even if they are not capitalized (e.g., an article title) in the reference. 
    • If the title is long, shorten it. The APA Manual does not give specifics as to how short.  
Author, A. A. (year, Month day). Title of article. Magazine Title, vol(no), pp–pp. https://xxx

Magazine Example: 

Simpson, V. L. (2013, March 27). Amanda Knox case puts Italian justice under scrutiny. Time. http://time.com
