A Journey to LCCC
Dr. Shaun Marsh has been at Lorain County Community College since 2019 and is presently the Program Director of the College's International Initiatives. In this role, Dr. Marsh hosts visiting foreign students and faculty and coordinates study abroad programs and exchanges with seven partner institutions, including institutions as diverse as the University of Savoie in France, Zealand in Denmark, York St. John University in the UK and Duy Tan University in Vietnam. At LCCC he has helped international students form a Rotaract International Club, hosted French and Danish exchange visits, connected LCCC's status as a 4-year degree serving institution to scholarships such as Rhodes and Fulbright, and created a Korean language course to be co-taught with a Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant from South Korea.
George Mason University and Seoul
Dr. Marsh previously served in the international student pathways program at George Mason University, and was also involved in the opening of the George Mason University Korea campus. He developed a language learning center at Hansung University in Seoul, and he accompanied fifty U.S. students from New York to Seoul as a Resident Director for the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y).
Educational Background
Dr. Marsh earned his doctorate in Education, with a specialization in Higher Education, in 2018 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He conducted his doctoral research in South Korea on the student experience at a U.S. branch campus, and particularly focused on student conceptions of their circumstances in a global postsecondary institution. Dr. Marsh earned a Master’s of Education from North Carolina State University in 2009, along with which he earned a departmental award for Outstanding Civic and Community Engagement for his support of non-American student peers in the Adult Education program. Prior to earning these degrees, and before a number of years spent in South Korea, Dr. Marsh graduated from UNC Wilmington in North Carolina with a degree in Communication Studies and a minor in English.
Awards and Professional Affiliations
At Hansung University in Seoul Dr. Marsh was three times honored with the Hansung University Best Teacher Award in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Dr. Marsh also represents LCCC in international education organizations, such as the American Education Research Association (AERA) and the Association of International Educators (NAFSA) . He further maintains a membership in the Golden Key International Honour Society and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

Description
Two very broad and ambiguous terms are commonly used to describe education and the transference of knowledge and relations across borders: global and international. However, the missions and expressed outcomes of the organizations most often using these two terms for their initiatives are usually similar: to open minds, build cultural awareness, increase communication, and highlight the interdependence of nations and communities, including our own.
Rather than spending too much time on the terminology, it is first more practical to consider how to be globally or internationally engaged, which means being successful in navigating new and unfamiliar cultures, or more simply, to be able to interact in and with communities where the culture is different from your own, comfortably and respectfully. Further, it is coming to an experiential meta-knowledge of how cultures, traditions, and beliefs emerge and have emerged, and cultural aspects of interactions.
